On 1 January 2017, NRCPD became a separate and independent company, registered at Companies House and also a registered charity. It is now a subsidiary company of Signature, with its own Board of Trustees. This is a significant step in the transition to full independence which we announced last May. The newly independent Board met on 17 January and, among other things, approved the NRCPD’s new Strategic Plan 2017-20, which you can find on our website under “About Us”. http://www.nrcpd.org.uk/strategic-plan-2017-2020
The Chair of NRCPD, Liz Duncan, said: “This is an exciting and very significant development for NRCPD. As a newly independent Regulator, we are working hard to develop our services and support to both users and registrants. We have published our strategy as the first step towards achieving enhanced professional recognition for our registrants and increased public protection for those who use them. It's an exciting time for me and my fellow Board members, and we are looking forward to the challenges ahead.”
On 2 February, the NRCPD Director, Alan Peacock, gave a presentation to members of the Nottinghamshire Deaf Wellbeing Action Group on the role and work of the registers. http://www.nottsdeafwellbeing.org.uk The Group campaigns for Deaf people to have equal access to health and social services. The workshop was facilitated by BDA England.
The workshop focused on the role of the interpreter, and how the NRCPD’s Code of Conduct informs their professional conduct and practice. Alan also provided an update on NRCPD’s new status as an independent regulator and its plans for the future.
The Director will be attending Heriot Watt University on 27 March, to give a presentation to 4th year BSL interpreting students, as part of a session on “preparing for the world of work”.
The next NRCPD Board Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 28 February 2017.
Lipspeaker UK and Sign for Thoughts will be running a Signature Level 3 lipspeaker training course in Manchester 2018. Based at Manchester Deaf Centre, the course will run over 15 months. Attendance will be 2 or 3 days a month on Friday/Saturday/Sundays. Self study will be necessary as well as attendance at lipreading classes.
