NRCPD is looking for two new lay Trustees

NRCPD are looking for two new trustees to join the Board. This is a unique opportunity at an exciting time on our journey to full independence, and in our vital work now and beyond that.

We are in the middle of a program of important and positive organisational change and development. Our registers are growing year on year and we now have more than 1,600 registrants.

Our purpose is to promote the best possible communication between D/deaf, deafblind people and hearing people.

We set high professional standards for language support professionals and maintain registers of those who meet these standards.

We promote the value of regulation to the professions, service users, Governments and public, private and not for profit organisations.

What we are looking for

Our trustees are required to have strategic vision, independent judgement, the desire to challenge where needed, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Applications from people who are D/deaf, deafblind or have hearing loss are especially encouraged.

We are looking for two people as lay Trustees (i.e. people who are not on our registers as translators, interpreters, etc.) who have a variety of skills and experience, particularly in business development and management, strategy and marketing.

Role description and person specification

The successful candidates for these positions will share our values and passion and be able to commit to the formal events such as board meetings, as well as further the interests of NRCPD in wider ways. You will demonstrate in your application and CV that you meet the person specification. If you would prefer, you can apply in BSL.

The role

  • You will act as an ambassador for NRCPD, inspiring confidence in what NRCPD is trying to achieve and representing NRCPD's aims and objectives.
  • You will contribute to the continual improvement of our services by commenting on standards, policies and procedures.
  • You will be involved in constructive collaboration, networking and consultation on behalf of NRCPD with key stakeholders and others as required.
  • You will contribute to NRCPD strategy for achieving its stated objectives and make your considerable energy and skills count in the many strands of our strategy.

The person specification

  • You will enjoy the challenge of strategic thinking to make a real difference.
  • You will be able to make the time necessary to read and prepare Board papers before meetings.
  • You will bring your personal qualities of integrity, independence, an interest in equality and access, enthusiasm, energy and firm resolve.
  • Once you take up the position on the board, you will quickly acquire and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the environments in which our professionals operate.
  • Your contribution will strengthen the profile and status of NRCPD, and the services offered by registered professionals, particularly amongst users, agencies and the general public.

What we need from you

You will need to attend four board meetings and one strategy day each year. Meetings are normally held in central London, with BSL and English Communication Support. As well as the four days meetings you can expect to spend another two to four days a year on NRCPD work between meetings, including taking part in email discussions.

The term is four years. Trustees are eligible for re-election for one additional term.

This is a voluntary role however all reasonable expenses incurred will be reimbursed.
