NRCPD Newsletter | March 2015

25 March 2015

Dear colleague

This month we have published our CPD handbook and are preparing for the upcoming audit.

We have recently had several enquiries about our requirements for an enhanced disclosure check for all Registrants and trainees. As a response to this we have clarified our requirements in this newsletter.

If you have questions about anything in this newsletter, please don't hesitate to contact us. You can also follow us on Twitter and like our Facebook page.

Kind regards

Kate Price

Registration Service Manager

Route to registration for Lipspeakers

We have approved the Signature Level 3 Certificate in Lipspeaking as a route to Registration. We hope to see an increased number of Lipspeakers on the Register in the near future.

Regulated Trainees

We are strengthening our guidelines for becoming a Regulated Trainee. This follows calls from the interpreting community to improve our guidance on who can endorse and supervise trainees. We will send you more information soon.

NHS England Interpreting and Translating Standards

The University of Manchester is conducting a survey to help them improve the quality of interpreting and translation in primary care on behalf of NHS England. They are seeking the views of RSLI, RSLT and Regulated Trainees.

More information can be found in the DBS guidance for employers

Focus on access in BSL in responses to NHS Consultation

We are pleased to note responses to the NHS England consultation on a draft accessible information standard had a particular focus on BSL.

For registrants

Working within your competence

We have recently been told about a few cases in which it appears a Registrant took on an assignment for which they were not competent. We are therefore reminding all Registrants you must

  • recognise and work within the limits of your competence, and if necessary, refer on to another proficient professional; and
  • only undertake assignments for which you have the appropriate qualifications, competence, and experience.

Working outside the limits of your competence means you are breaking the Code of Conduct, which could ultimately lead to you being removed from the Register. But more seriously, it also means you could endanger the client.

In some domains, such as the criminal justice system or health and social care, being competent usually means having skills and experience beyond the qualifications required for registration. If you are not sure how to develop your competence, please contact us or speak to an experienced Registrant.

Your inclusion on a Register means NRCPD is satisfied you have met the requirements to practise as that type of communication and language professional only. For example, if you are only included on the Register of Sign Language Interpreters you should not practise as a Lipspeaker. If you do you will be breaking the Code of Conduct.

Practice breaks policy

Our new practice breaks policy that you recently received by email will be implemented next month. If you have any questions please contact us.

CPD handbook

We have published a CPD handbook to help Registrants meet their CPD requirements. Your feedback will be very welcome.

CPD audit

Our annual audit of CPD compliance will take place in May. Ten per cent of each Register will be asked to submit their CPD record.

We will write to the selected Registrants in April to let them know what they need to do. If you were selected to take part in the audit in 2014 you will be exempt from it this year.

There is more information about the audit in the CPD handbook.

Disclosure and Barring Service Checks

Following recent queries, we are clarifying our requirement regarding Disclosure and Barring Service checks.

There are three levels of check available: standard enhanced and enhanced with a barred list check. We require Registrants to confirm they have an enhanced disclosure that is less than three years old. We do not require you to confirm you have had a barred list check.
