Statement on the creation of RBSLI

21 April 2015

Following the creation of the Regulatory Body for Sign Language Interpreters (RBSLI), a self regulatory organisation set up by some members of the sign language interpreting profession, Huw Vaughan Thomas, chair of NRCPD, said:

"NRCPD exists to protect the public. We do that by holding registers of communication professionals working with deaf and deafblind people and promoting the importance of regulation.

"We also seek to work with anyone that has a similar aim. In recent years, the partnership between NRCPD, deaf and deafblind people, and communication and language professionals has led to an increasing number of public services making NRCPD registration a requirement.

"We will therefore be inviting RBSLI to engage with us about increasing public protection by strengthening the regulation of communication and language professionals."
