NRCPD Newsletter | June 2015

26 June 2015

Dear colleague

This month we are preparing for our upcoming Board meeting which takes place in London in July. The agenda includes governance arrangements with Signature, the outcome of the consultation on our Code of Conduct and complaints process, and strengthening our requirements for Regulated Trainees.

The Board will also receive the latest CPD audit report. As a result of the report, we will update the CPD handbook, provide general feedback on CPD for the benefit of all Registrants, and explore a reflective practice approach to CPD.

If you have questions about anything in this newsletter, please don't hesitate to contact us. You can also follow us on Twitter and like our Facebook page.

Kind regards

Kate Price

Minister confirms registration requirement in CCS framework agreement

Minister for the Cabinet Office, Matthew Hancock MP, has confirmed the Crown Commercial Service framework agreement for language services will make NRCPD registration a requirement for sign language interpreters.

In response to a Parliamentary question from Shadow Minister for Disabled People, Kate Green MP, Mr Hancock said: "The minimum qualifications for British Sign Language interpreters employed through the framework shall be those listed at www.nrcpd.org.uk and they must be registered with NRCPD or the Scottish Association of Sign Language Interpreters (SASLI)."

Ministry of Justice Language Service Contract

We have concerns about the Ministry of Justice second generation contract for language services after its failure to confirm it will make registration a requirement.

Unregistered communication and language professionals

Please contact us if you have concerns about unregistered communication and language professionals, particularly if they are not qualified. Although we can't investigate complaints about them, we will contact the agencies they work for to inform them of the importance of using qualified and registered communication and language professionals.

Funding for communication and language qualifications

Shadow Minister for Disabled People, Kate Green MP, recently asked the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills about funding for communication and language qualifications.

For registrants

Applying to be a TSLI Supervisor

If you supervise trainees, or you would like to supervise trainees, remember that you have to apply via the portal. Trainees can't apply or renew unless their supervisor has been approved as a supervisor. For further information please see the guidelines for supervisors on the website.

Keeping your registration up-to-date

To avoid a lapse in your registration we recommend you start the renewal process at least 3 weeks before your current registration expires. If you let your registration lapse for more than 3 months you will have to reapply rather than renew.
