At its meeting on 8 August 2017, The NRCPD Board decided that the current registration contract should be amended to include provisions which will allow NRCPD to keep a registrant effective on the register when they fail to pay the annual registration fee, if there is an outstanding complaint about the registrant being dealt with.
Registration with NRCPD is by way of a contract which registrants enter into on paying the registration fee and joining the register. The contract between NRCPD and a registrant is terminated if the registrant fails to pay the annual renewal fee. At this point, under the existing contract, the individual is no longer subject to NRCPD's jurisdiction, and we cannot continue to investigate any outstanding complaint about an individual.
Our aim as a voluntary regulator is to act in the public interest, which includes investigating complaints about registrants when allegations are made that they are in breach of the Code of Conduct. We fail to meet that aim if we are unable to deal with outstanding complaints because an individual decides to leave the register. The Board has decided to amend the contract to enable it better to fulfil its role in protecting the public and to bring NRCPD into line with other regulators.
We will be writing to all registrants formally about the change to the contract and when this will happen shortly.
This year's audit took place on 8 and 9 June 2017. The 104 registrants who were randomly selected were notified by email on 17 March and given 8 weeks in which to submit their evidence (by 12 May). From the initial 104 registrants, 10 were deferred due to personal circumstances (maternity leave, illness and one who could not comply with the process).
A further 3 registrants also failed to comply with the audit process and will be deferred to next year.
91 registrants were audited in total.
51 were approved directly and the remainder were required to submit additional supporting evidence. Of those who were asked to submit further evidence, seven will be re-sampled next year.
We have returned CPD files to those registrants who requested this; however can you please make us aware by Friday 25 August 2017 if you wish yours to be returned.
The Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity (Sands) is currently designing a one-day bereavement care workshop for spoken language and sign language interpreters, to be launched in 2018. The course will aim to enable interpreters to develop the knowledge and skills to facilitate effective and sensitive communication between health practitioners and non-English speaking and deaf parents who experience the death of a baby, before, during or shortly after birth.
It is crucial that the new course includes contributions from interpreters who have worked with non-English speaking or deaf parents either at the time of their loss and/or during any follow up appointments afterwards. If you are willing to share something of your experiences and/or want to contribute suggestions please complete this short survey, ideally by the end of August. Mencap support a man in Chatham who is deaf and has a learning disability. He is doing a work experience placement at an SEN school in Chatham one day per week, and is looking for a hearing signer to support him. He doesn't read and write so he will need support from a speaking signer to enable him to communicate with students and staff.
The role is one day per week; which day it is will depend on the volunteer's availability.
Travel expenses, induction and ongoing support provided.
