20 January 2022
In recent months, we have been working with several other charities and organisations in the Deaf sector to promote a British Sign Language Bill, as part of the BSL Act Now! campaign. This campaign is being led by David Buxton - Chair of the British Deaf Association.
Our aims are to have the Bill declare BSL as an official language of the UK, and provide for a BSL Council that will be able to promote and advise on matters relating to the language, and mechanisms to remove the barriers faced by Deaf British Sign Language users.
On January 28th 2022, Rosie Cooper MP will be presenting the BSL Bill's second reading at the House of Commons and it will be debated in parliament for the first time. On the same day as Rosie Cooper MP is presenting the Bill, a rally to support the bill is set to take place in Parliament Square Gardens from 11:30am - 2:30pm.
If you would like to attend the rally, please email: BSLActNow@bda.org.uk with your name and anyone who is expected to come and they will let you know further details about arrangements including stewards, safety and control of the event. They also need volunteer stewards and BSL/English Interpreters. Please let them know if you are interested.
You can also support the #BSLActNow campaign by writing to your local MP before January 28th 2022. For more information, please see: BSL Act Now.
With thanks,
NRCPD.
