New guidance for Regulated Trainees will be published in early 2023. Ahead of this guidance we want to empower current and future Trainee Sign Language Interpreters and Translators with the knowledge of how we can support you as an NRCPD registered language service professional.
1. To join the NRCPD registers as a Regulated Trainee, you need to be on an Approved Course. There are many pathways to NRCPD registration. You can find further information about our Approved Courses here: www.nrcpd.org.uk/approved-courses
2. Throughout your training to become a qualified and NRCPD registered professional, you will need to be endorsed as 'safe to practise' by a qualified assessor, this person is currently called your 'endorser'. You should, also, have someone who will 'supervise' and support your training and development, currently called your 'supervisor'.
3. It is important to note that your supervisor does not have to be your assessor (or endorser) and they do not need to be directly involved in your training course. However, they should be someone who is an RSLI/RSLT and has the necessary qualifications and professional experience to support you effectively. Your supervisor should be someone that you feel is a good fit for you and has the necessary qualifications and professional experience to support your development. We recommend meeting with a few supervisors for an initial consultation to help you decide who to work with. To assist you with selecting a supervisor, you can find a list of qualified supervisors in our CPD handbook here: www.nrcpd.org.uk/documents/professional_standards/The-finished-NRCPD-CPD-handbook.pdf?#zoom=50
4. Coming in early 2023, we will be publishing a highly comprehensive suite of practice guidance to support you in applying the standards in your professional practice. The guidance is part of our current aim to strengthen regulation and develop the professions on the registers. For further information, please see our 2021-23 strategy here: https://www.nrcpd.org.uk/documents/pdfs/new_poster_for_strategy.pdf
5. Our dedicated and experienced registration team will support you throughout your registration cycles. This includes your initial registration and your future renewals. They can support you in interpreting the standards within the code of conduct and, when you qualify, they can support you with advice around CPD.
6. NRCPD will actively engage with your peer support networks to ensure you are kept up to date with registration requirements, developed guidance and any other regulatory developments. As your regulator, we are committed to supporting you in your professional practice and safe development.
7. If you have any queries, we can assist you anytime between 9:00am - 4:00pm Monday to Friday. You can also reach us on our social media channels.
As the UK national regulator of language service professionals working with deaf and deafblind people, we are proud to say that we now have over 1,700 professionals on the registers across the UK. Your NRCPD registration is a mark of good calibre and professional standards, recognised by public bodies such as the NHS, Government and Ministry of Justice.
We look forward to supporting you throughout your career as a NRCPD registered professional.
