Independent Registrar Appointed

03 July 2023

We are delighted to announce that Rakesh Sharma has been appointed Independent Registrar of NRCPD.

Previously, this role was held by a NRCPD Trustee after we appointed Theresa Thomas-Morton as our Chief Executive Officer in February 2023. Recruiting an Independent Registrar ensures that all decisions made by the Registrar are underpinned by the values of integrity, impartiality and proportionality.

The Independent Registrar role

The role of the independent registrar is key to maintaining the integrity and credibility of NRCPD.

Rakesh is responsible for three key areas:

Regulatory Oversight:
  • Safeguard the interests of language service professionals and service users
  • Maintain the highest levels of professionalism
  • Monitor compliance
Registration Processes
  • Engage with the registration team to ensure language service professionals undergo rigorous evaluation
  • Ensure that impartiality and fairness is applied to all applications
Professional Conduct:
  • Key decision-maker in professional misconduct investigations ensuring transparency and fairness throughout the process

Rakesh is a regulatory lawyer with a wealth of experience in professional discipline and fitness to practise. He spent over a decade as a police officer before qualifying as a solicitor in 2008, specialising in criminal defence, military court work and police misconduct. Rakesh later settled in healthcare regulatory work which he continues with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). He deals with fitness to practice cases of nurses and midwives that are alleged to be impaired by reason of misconduct, health or criminal conviction.

He has been in post since June 5 2023 and we look forward to working with Rakesh in maintaining the integrity and credibility of NRCPD.

With thanks, NRCPD.
