Nature of Complaint

The Complainant raised concerns around the conduct of the registrant when they engaged as a court interpreter for a hearing in Family Court proceedings. The Complainant was remotely monitoring the registrant's interpretation and had concerns which were also expressed by others present. The registrant's conduct raised concerns about their professional practice which included basic interpreting errors and inappropriate behaviour towards the court and deaf intermediary. The case was rescheduled to a later listing date due to these concerns, and in recognition of the time constraints.

Summary

Investigation conducted into potential breach of Section 3.1 and 6.1 of NRCPD's Code of Conduct. Witness statements obtained from Intermediary and RSLI. Evidence from a solicitor sought but not obtained, evidence from Agency also sought and obtained.

Outcome

Case Examiners decided based on the evidence provided, that there was a realistic prospect of finding an impairment of fitness to practice, but that it was not in the public interest to refer the case to a Complaints Committee.

They found there had been a breach of 3.1 and 6.1 of the Code. The Case Examiners offered advice to the registrant to be more assertive with agencies and booking providers when accepting assignments so as to not be persuaded to take on bookings that they were not confident or competent to do. They also asked the registrant to agree an undertaking with the Register to attend one mentoring session with a qualified mentor to review their professional behaviour and integrity, providing notes as evidence for their CPD record and proof of the fulfillment of the undertaking within a 6-month timeframe.
